How can you prove your relationship is real for a K-1 visa?

When filing Form I-129F, Petition For Alien Fiancé(e) to obtain a K-1 nonimmigrant visa for your fiancé(e), you will need to prove the relationship is genuine. The U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) must prove that you and your fiancé(e) have a bona fide intention to marry, i.e., that the relationship is genuine (you are not marrying each other solely for an immigration benefit).

Thus, you need evidence that proves this. Here is what to submit:

Photographs

Submit photos that you and your fiancé(e) took when together. You must have met them in person within two years of filing your petition. Consider providing date and location-stamped photos.

If you and your fiancé(e) haven’t met in person within the last two years, submit evidence that shows doing so would have violated strict and long-established customs of your fiancé(e)’s foreign culture or social practice or would be an extreme hardship on you.

Communication records

Submit emails, text messages, phone call records and social media interactions showing contact between you.  If you have written letters, they can also serve as great evidence. Your communication records should span the length of your relationship.

Evidence of activities as a couple

Consider providing proof of the activities you have done together. For example, flight tickets or passport stamps if you went on trips, movie or concert tickets and so on.

Joint financial documents

If you have joint bank accounts, credit card statements, properties, mortgage or loan documents, utility bills, ownership of a vehicle and so forth, submit these documents.

Written statements from loved ones

Request your family members and friends who know both of you to attest to the authenticity of your relationship through written statements.

The USCIS can deny your application for the K-1 nonimmigrant visa if you fail to prove your relationship is genuine. Learn more about the documents you will need to provide to help your fiancé(e) enter the U.S.
