What might jeopardize your green card?

Green cards can be tough to get. If you have managed to get one you need to ensure you don’t make any mistakes that could jeopardize your retention of it.

Here are a few to watch out for:

Forgetting to renew it in time

Some green cards need renewing. As with all immigration matters, this can take time so be sure to get your application in early, just in case. Also, set up some alerts on your calendars to warn you with plenty of time to spare in advance.

Not residing here

A green card gives you the right to reside in the United States, but you need to keep exercising that right if you want to keep it. You cannot just get a green card and then disappear out of the country for large lengths of time. While you can travel, you need to be seen to be still living here, not somewhere else. You also need to behave as a tax resident and declare and pay your taxes here.

Being found guilty of certain crimes

Judges sometimes issue orders to deport a person who is here on a green card after convicting them of one or more crimes. Most of the time that does not happen, but it can be an option where the crime was particularly serious or where a series of crimes result in the judge believing the person does not deserve to stay in the country.

If you have doubts about the security of your green card, then you cannot afford to leave things to chance. Seeking legal guidance can help you understand the situation better and determine what action you need to take.
